If you checked out the acid/alkaline foods info on previous post you may want some suggestions on how to alkalize your diet. My biggest problem is the acidity from animal protein. I don’t eat a lot of animal protein, mostly turkey and fish, but wanted to cut back even more…and then, I discovered the high protein content of whey. I don’t mean just any whey but organic high quality whey from grass fed cows. Believe me, all whey is not created equal (some companies put fillers in and you can’t be sure of the source or the quality).
After milk has been processed into cheese, whey is the remaining liquid and usually comes in a powdered form. You may be thinking…dairy products don’t agree with me. Well, I’m sensitive to most dairy products but I do just fine with whey. A few benefits of whey:
- Easily digested (within 30-60 minutes)
- Builds a healthier immune system
- Boosts metabolism for fat burning
- Increases muscle
- Decreases body fat
Most mornings, I drink a delicious fruity/whey protein shake to start the day and sometimes treat myself to a chocolate/whey protein shake in the afternoon.
As usual, I did my homework and found what I felt was the best quality of whey available. I’ve been drinking the same whey shake for five years now and still enjoy it. I have looked for a protein shake that can compare but haven’t found any with all the nutrients the Isalean shake has and it’s formulated for optimal glucose delivery to our brain.
Solution: Find a whey that works for you and add it to your daily health regime.
A Healthier Choice: My whey of choice is manufactured by a company called Isagenix. Their shake has 23 grams of protein as well as all the amino acids, and over 50 other vitamins, herbs and minerals and tastes delicious! I drink the Isalean shakes in Vanilla and Chocolate and add an extra scoop of IsaPro (pure whey) for even more of a ‘whey good experience’. I also sprinkle IsaPro whey on hot cereals, include in Pamela’s wheatless pancake and waffle mix and add a tablespoon to rice milk with granola (see posts on insulin resistance for the importance of balancing carbs with protein).
Tried & True Tip: Here’s my favorite morning shake recipe:
- 8 ounces of purified water
- 1/3-1/2 cup frozen fruit (mango or cherries from Trader Joe’s are my favorites)
- 2-3 ice cubes
- 2 scoops of Vanilla Isalean Shake
- 1 scoop IsaPro Whey protein
- 3 T ground flax seed (I prefer the golden flax seed and purchase it from Whole Foods and grind it just before adding to retain more nutrients)
Put all in blender and blend until desired consistency (can add water if too thick or more ice if too thin)
My favorite blender is the Bullet—it makes delicious creamy smooth shakes in a couple of minutes. It has two different size cups—16 oz and 8 oz and I use the smaller cup with the two prong blade to grind flax seed and the larger cup with the 4 prong blade to mix everything. And with the bullet you can drink it right out of the cup—easy clean up…and it’s small enough to pack for longer trips.
